THE SWEET SUGAR ISLAND

Everything tastes sweet in the island of Java. During the days of the Dutch administration, Java was one of the biggest producers of sugar in the world. Today, only 60 factories remain. Indonesia now grows very little of the sugar it consumes and is now the world’s second biggest importer of sugar after Russia. But the cultural celebration, big steam machinery and hard working laborers are still there as a reminder of the sweet glory days of the past.
