DOUBLED LAMPEDUSA

In a couple of weeks, dozens of boats of Tunisian migrants landed on Lampedusa.

The last arrivals brought the current number of migrants on the island to nearly 4,780. Lampedusa has a population of 5,000.

As the Reception Center for Immigrants hosts 580 people, the migrants are being hosted wherever possible around the island.

On the 17th of March, the Anniversary of Italy Unity, the citizens exasperated by the continual arrivals of migrants, displaying banners against Italy.

On 18th of March, hundreds of Lampedusa inhabitants protested threatening to jump into the water to prevent from morning at a patrol boat with over a hundred immigrants on board.

On the 20th of March, people leaded by the mayor De Rubeis protested to prevent the built of a the tent camp for immigrants.

Commissioner UNHCR Laura Boldrini and Margherita Bonivar, president of the Schengen Committee, arrived on the island on the 22nd of March.

After the Tunisian Revolution that took place between december and january 2011, since February, around 14,000 Tunisian migrants have arrived on Lampedusa.
