People only moved to Potrero Grande about 10 years but the neighbourhood is already considered one of the most troubled in the country. Extreme poverty, unemployment and lack of opportunities have propelled the area into a downward spiral of widespread drugs abuse, deadly violence and deeply rooted social problems.

Thabsile Brightness Sishi, 25 (right), leads the funeral procession for her aunt Thembi Veze, along with her brother, Bongumenzi Knowledge Sishi, 15. Thabsile and Bongumenzi have been living with their aunt and her three children in the Richmond Farm Transit Camp near Durban since 2009. “In the camp, I can’t say it’s nice to stay here– there’s no park, nowhere to play soccer, nowhere to rest,” says Bongumenzi. “It’s too dangerous. There’s no security. We are waiting for moving – they are still building the RDPs. They said we would be here two years.”

Rhodes University students Caroline Tereh, 19, and Zano Mthembu, 20, at Tereh’s apartment in Grahamstown. “I’m nervous to tell my dad that I’m dating a black guy because my parents moved to South Africa from Germany during apartheid,” says Tereh. “They tend to have a stereotype about black people because that is the only thing they knew when they moved here. It’s hard to explain… that times have obviously changed… And also I wouldn’t want my dad to say that I’m not allowed to date Zano, because that would probably be the worse thing for me.”

IN CASE OF LOSS / Francesco Giusti

March 2011 / Ras al-Jedir, Libya-Tunisia border checkpoint

Nearly 70,000 Bangladeshi nationals were residing in Libya as migrant workers when violence erupted in February 2011. As the conflict intensified, thousands fled to neighboring countries, facing congested borders and overcrowded refugee camps and airports where they are waiting to return home. 20,000 migrants have been able to return to Bangladesh – most of them heavily in debt and with no ready means of earning a living. The unintended consequences of this unfolding tragedy in Libya underscore the evacuees’ desperation and the severe poverty they may face upon their return to Bangladesh; many have sold their homes and mortgaged their own lives for the opportunity to provide for their families by earning income overseas. All of them are male migrant workers who were employed in chinese, south-corean, european or libyan construction companies like HANIL, SHINHAN, SARAYA, EREN or CGCG for a very low income (about 150$ per month) and in most cases they are forced to work some months without being paid before receiving a salary. There are also reports of their being harrassed, while crossing Libya, by pro-Gheddafi forces who oblige them to pay bribes and yield their few possessions. When passing the border, all they own is a bag with few clothes, some food and beverage, sometimes a blanket. Many of them put their ID photos on their bags to recognize them among all the others and in the unlikely hope to find them again in case of loss.
