VANISHING CUBA

Fidel Castro’s Twilight, Cuba

2004

Like shadows at sunset, the future of Cuba is a change which arouses great fears and tremendous hopes. The projections of Cubans are conflicting and ambivalent but all of them agree that nothing will happen before their “ Lider maximo “, Fidel Castro disappears. The Cuban generation that saw the revolution, though aware of the importance of their great enemy, the United States, in the creation of the Cuban identity is proud of its conquests and tend to defend its present whilst fearing its future. It’s the young people, in Cuba half of the population, who are deeply dissatisfied of the present conditions of the country. Along with the opening to tourism, nowadays Cuba’s biggest industry, the new generation gets in touch with tourists’ western way of life and begins to have desires and ambitions that Cuban economy cannot afford. Meanwhile time seems to pass inexorably slow on the island.
